Scanners across West Michigan

Ottawa County scanner

Ottawa County Central Dispatch sends fire and medical calls on its fire dispatch channels for the north and south halves of the county. Our receiver records every one, and each dispatch is transcribed and turned into a call within a couple of minutes, with the type of call, the block, the units sent and what crews report from the scene.

Kent County scanner

Kent County's fire departments are dispatched on three fire dispatch channels (north, east and southwest), plus a channel for ambulances. Our receiver records them and transcribes each dispatch: the address block, the call, the patient's age and complaint for medical calls, and the units sent.

Grand Rapids scanner

Grand Rapids Fire sends call details to its trucks by computer, so its radio channel carries unit status (en route, on scene, back in quarters) rather than spoken dispatches. Grand Rapids calls come from the city's public police and fire dispatched-calls lists, which run about 30 minutes behind.

Listen yourself

Scanner apps, a P25 Phase II scanner, or a small receiver of your own can all pick up West Michigan's fire and EMS dispatch: see how to listen to West Michigan scanners. When you hear "Echo" or "in quarters", scanner codes and radio terms explains it.

West Michigan scanner: questions & answers

Is there a live West Michigan police scanner?

616 Dispatch doesn't stream scanner audio. It lists calls as they're dispatched, updated every minute, including the fire and EMS calls our own receiver hears and transcribes. To hear audio, see how to listen to West Michigan scanners.

Can you hear police on a scanner in West Michigan?

Fire and EMS dispatch is generally open. Many police talkgroups on the state radio system (MPSCS) are encrypted, and no scanner, app or website can hear an encrypted talkgroup. 616 Dispatch lists police calls from the public dispatch lists agencies publish instead.

What do the codes on the scanner mean?

"Echo", "Priority 1", "in quarters" and the rest are explained in plain English on scanner codes and radio terms.
